OnTheWay: Breaking Down Barriers to Student Mental Health Support

How three students built a digital bridge between counselors and their peers at IIITDM Jabalpur

College is supposed to be the best years of your life. Yet for many students, it's also the most overwhelming.

Between academic pressure, social anxieties, career uncertainties, and the general chaos of early adulthood, mental health often takes a backseat. The problem isn't just that students struggle—it's that seeking help feels like climbing another mountain when you're already exhausted.

That's the gap OnTheWay was built to close.

The Problem With Traditional Counseling

Traditional campus counseling systems face a fundamental challenge: accessibility. Students have to navigate bureaucracy, schedule appointments days or weeks in advance, and often face the anxiety of walking into a counselor's office where anyone might see them.

For a generation that grew up texting more than talking, these barriers can feel insurmountable.

OnTheWay reimagines this entire experience. Built specifically for students at IIITDM Jabalpur, it transforms counseling from a formal, intimidating process into something as natural as messaging a friend.

A Platform Built Around Real Student Needs

Breaking the Ice with Interactive Quizzes

Mental health conversations are hard to start. OnTheWay begins with interactive quizzes that help students understand their own mental state without the pressure of a face-to-face conversation. These aren't generic online quizzes—they're designed specifically for college students and provide instant, personalized feedback.

Think of it as a gentle entry point. Students can explore their feelings privately before deciding if they want to reach out for support.

Choice and Control in Your Hands

Here's what makes OnTheWay different: students choose their counselor.

You can browse profiles of all approved counselors, learn about their specializations and approach, and decide who you feel comfortable talking to. No assignments, no randomization—just genuine choice in your mental health journey.

Conversations That Feel Natural

The heart of OnTheWay is its secure, private chat system. Students can message counselors directly in an environment that feels familiar and comfortable. No waiting rooms, no formal appointments—just real-time support when you need it most.

For counselors, this means meeting students where they are, both literally and emotionally. They can view quiz results to better understand student concerns and provide more targeted support.

Built by Students, For Students

OnTheWay emerged from a simple observation: the students who need help most are often the least likely to seek it through traditional channels.

The development team—Dhruv Rishishwar, Anshul Shukla, and Sparsh Kumar—understood this intimately because they lived it. They built the platform they wished existed when they needed support.

The tech stack reflects this practical, student-centered approach:

  • Frontend: React, JavaScript, HTML, CSS for a smooth, intuitive interface
  • Backend: Node.js and Express.js for reliable, real-time communication
  • Database: MySQL for secure data management

Beyond Crisis Response

What sets OnTheWay apart is its holistic approach to student wellbeing. This isn't just a crisis hotline—it's a continuous support system.

For students: Take quizzes regularly to track your mental health, reach out proactively rather than waiting for a crisis, and provide feedback to help improve the platform.

For counselors: Access student information (with appropriate consent), view quiz results to identify patterns and concerns, and engage in ongoing conversations rather than isolated sessions.

For administrators: Create relevant quizzes based on campus needs, manage counselor approvals to ensure quality, and monitor feedback to continuously improve the system.

The Bigger Picture

OnTheWay represents something larger than a single platform at one institution. It's a proof of concept for how digital tools can humanize rather than replace mental health support.

The most powerful technology isn't always the most complex—it's the technology that removes barriers between people who need help and people who can provide it.

In a world where students are more connected yet more isolated than ever, platforms like OnTheWay offer a model for how institutions can meet students where they actually are: online, overwhelmed, and looking for support that feels accessible rather than intimidating.

What's Next?

Mental health support isn't a problem you solve once—it's an ongoing commitment. The OnTheWay team continues to refine the platform based on user feedback, always asking: How can we make it easier for students to get the help they need?

Because at the end of the day, seeking help shouldn't be another source of stress. It should be as simple as sending a message.

OnTheWay is more than a student project—it's a step toward reimagining campus mental health support for the digital age. Passionate about student wellbeing or interested in contributing? The team would love to hear from you.
